There’s a stillness that settles over you when you encounter a bear in the wild, a kind of experience that stays in your body long after they’ve moved on. Painting bears isn’t just about capturing their form, it’s about holding that silence, that weight, that quiet power in a way that words can’t. I’ve spent days watching them from a distance, mothers resting by tidal rocks, juveniles tumbling through streams, each moment is just as inspiring to me. Painting bears is how I stay close to the Canadian wilds, how I translate awe into something physical. It’s not just about documentation, it’s about creating a deeper sense of empathy and urgency for the protection of each species and the wild spaces they call home.

Pacific Light

Acrylic on Canvas

2021

With artwork such as Pacific Light, the canvas becomes a threshold; you don’t just view the bear, you meet it. Painted at a life-size scale, this piece, along with others in my bear series, offers a perspective grounded in anatomical accuracy and ecological reality, developed in collaboration with wildlife photographers and scientists. Meeting a spirit bear at scale shifts how we understand these animals, not just emotionally, but educationally.

NOTES FROM THE GRIZZLY BEAR FOUNDATION

The grizzly bear is a keystone species; without them, the entire ecosystem suffers and biodiversity decreases. Their presence is so impactful even the landscape changes under their weight — rivers, vegetation, and forests are shaped by the grizzly bear. The natural world is not the only realm in which the grizzly bear wields influence. Since time immemorial the grizzly has acted as a teacher, a guide, and a mirror through which we can better understand ourselves and our relationship to nature. Protecting the grizzly bear maintains vast ecosystems, whilst also nurturing our connection to the lands we share.

DIRECTLY GIVING BACK

Each bear painting is more than a work of art; it’s part of a larger commitment to conservation. For every original piece sold, 10-20 percent of the proceeds are donated directly to a partner wildlife organization actively working to protect bears and their habitats. These partnerships are carefully chosen to align with the species and regions represented in the artwork, ensuring that each painting gives back to the very ecosystems and population that inspired it. Through this model, art becomes a tangible force for protection, education, and lasting impact.

MEET THE INCREDIBLE GUIDES, PHOTOGRAPHERS, AND SCIENTISTS I WORK WITH ON THIS COLLECTION

Collaborating with bear photographers and guides is at the heart of my creative process. These partnerships allow me to work from ethically sourced reference images and moments that reflect genuine animal behaviour, untouched and unposed. By connecting directly with professionals who spend countless hours observing and documenting these species, I gain a deeper understanding of the landscapes, light, and stories behind each bear. This collaboration not only brings authenticity, but also bridges the worlds of science, field observation, and fine art; honouring the efforts of those who help make these encounters possible.
